The official currency is the Forint and
money may only be changed at official places. You need to
keep receipts of transactions so that forints can be re-exchanged
when you leave the country. There are ATMs all around in the
city. You will find that some outlets accept euro currency,
but the exchange rate won’t be as good as in a bank
or your hotel reception.
There are more than ten touchscreen Tourist Information
points dotted throughout Budapest. Currently locations include:
Tourinform offices, Ferihegy airport, the Southern Railway
Station (Déli pu), Astoria metro station, the Royal
Castle and Central Market Hall.
Like all major cities, it pays to pay attention to your belongings
at all time and do not leave anything lying around or open.
All that is needed is a careful attention to what you are
doing.
The Budapest Card (Kártya) provides
unlimited travel on public transport, free entry to fifty-five
museums and discounts on sightseeing tours (50%), boat trips
(25%) and restaurants. Cards come in two or three day versions
and include a brochure which contains maps of Buda, Pest and
the metro system. For travellers using Budapest Airport's
minibus or car rental service, the card remains valid for
an additional two days. Those under fourteen are automatically
covered by adult cards. The cost of a 48 hour Card is about
€20 and it includes one adult and one child under 14.
